LATERAL COGNITIVE PROCESSING AND BELIEF UPDATING. byERIN HOLCOMBAugust 2010 Advisor:Dr. R. Douglas WhitmanMajor:Psychology (Clinical)Degree:Master of ArtsBias in mental representations and belief systems has been linked toasymmetries in information processing by the two hemispheres in research thatuses wide variety of methodologies and participant samples. Also, associations have been drawn between such biases in belief systems and sociopoliticalorientation leading to the hypothesis that links can be drawn from lateral processingthrough cognitive style to social and political orientation. This study sought toexamine individual differences in laterality – as assessed via a lateralized semanticpriming methodology – and manifestations of rigidity and flexibility in belief updatingwithin a sociopolitical context. Analyses revealed that a theoretical inference ofhemispheric communication based on accuracy data from the lexical decisionmaking task was significantly related to self-reported charectorlogical rigidity andsociopolitical orientation. Specifically, greater communication between thehemispheres was significantly correlated with a lower degree of characterologicalrigidity and sociopolitical liberalism. This study proposes a dual hemispheric model

متن کاملValence-Dependent Belief Updating: Computational Validation
People tend to update beliefs about their future outcomes in a valence-dependent way: they are likely to incorporate good news and to neglect bad news. However, belief formation is a complex process which depends not only on motivational factors such as the desire for favorable conclusions, but also on multiple cognitive variables such as prior beliefs, knowledge about personal vulnerabilities ...
متن کاملCognitive Style and Auditor's judgment: Does Cognitive Style mitigate the Impact of recency bias on the auditors’ belief revision process?
Abstract: The purpose of the present study is two-dimensional. First, provide more evidence of the effects of information order on auditors' beliefs, and secondly, examine whether auditors vary their beliefs in different cognitive styles. These goals were achieved through the use of experienced professional auditors. To determine the effects of information sequence, Hogarth and Einhorn’s belie...

متن کاملIntermediate Judgments Inhibit Belief Updating: Zeno's Paradox in Decision Making
Rational agents should update their beliefs in the light of new evidence. Equally, changes in belief should depend only on the quality of the evidence, and not on factors such as the order in which the evidence is acquired, or whether intermediate judgements are requested during evidence acquisition. In contrast we show that requests for intermediate judgments can inhibit belief updating for re...
